about

2 track single. A taster from the forthcoming new Lounge Bar Orchestra album. Composer and orchestra leader Reg Omeroyd was inspired by his favourite songwriters and composers on this collection of never before heard material. Originally recorded at NEPP Archibald Studios in 1971.

Greg Healey revisits the Reg Omeroyd archives once more with a digital single featuring two tracks from the forthcoming second Lounge Bar Orchestra album (due in late 2022).

Unlike previous releases by the Lounge Bar Orchestra these recordings were not made for the programmes of Ousewater Television, but instead were conceived as a celebration of some of Omeroyd’s favourite composers and songwriters.

‘West Riding Telegraph Engineer’ is an homage to Jimmy Webb’s uniquely beautiful style and breathtaking aural vistas. There is a nod towards the easy vibe of the Wrecking Crew by the men and women of the Lounge Bar Orchestra here too; although the cold and damp confines of the now long defunct NEPP Archibald Recording Studios, Shipley, are said to have cramped their style somewhat. Recorded in the winter of 1971, these two songs feature guest appearances from Stanley Wax, on keyboards, and Maximilian Traut, on flute.

Reg is found in wistful and melancholic mood here, although one ameliorated by a characteristically wry Omeroydian undertow. Written at a time of great change and upheaval for Reg’s home county of Yorkshire, with the mass closures of many much loved old railway lines and the arrival of motorways, ‘West Riding Telegraph Engineer’ is unashamedly escapist and nostalgic.

‘Parade of Shops’, an unusual hymn to the rows of humble shops found on countless housing estates across the UK at that time, mixes French baroque orchestral pop with elements of British psychedelia. Wax once again guests on keyboards, with Traut manning flute, oboe and bassoon.

Digitally remastered from tapes discovered behind a false wall during renovations at the building that once housed the NEPP Archibald Studios, these recordings, along with those on the forthcoming album, perhaps offer the single biggest insight into the tastes Reg Omeroyd the man.

West Riding Telegraph Engineer b/w Parade of Shops is released on 5th of February on Ousewater Television Records and is available to buy here - theloungebarorchestra.bandcamp.com/album/west-riding-telegraph-engineer-b-w-parade-of-shops
